Teaching assignments

What this page is for​

Deciding who teaches which subject to which class. Until an assignment exists, a subject does not appear for those pupils, no journal is created for it, and the teacher cannot set homework or exams for that class.

The tabs​

Matrix​

A grid of subjects against classes. Each cell holds the teacher. Pick from the cell to assign, and clear it to unassign.

Cells outside a subject's grade range are greyed out with an explanation — see grade ranges.

Subjects​

Your school's subject list. You can:

  • add subjects individually
  • bulk-add from the national catalogue, which brings proper names and icons
  • edit a subject's name and its grade range
  • set its grading system
  • delete a subject
Deleting a subject removes its journals

It also detaches the classes it was taught to. Work a teacher authored — lesson plans, exams, homework — survives, just unlinked. The confirmation tells you how many classes and journals are affected before you commit.

Splits​

For subjects taught to half a class at a time, such as languages. Each split has its own teacher and its own pupils.

Staffing​

A per-teacher view: what each one teaches and how much. Useful for spotting someone with nothing assigned, or far too much.

Grade ranges​

A subject can be limited to a range of grades — for example chemistry from grade 7 to 12. Then:

  • the matrix greys out cells outside the range
  • assigning outside it is refused by the server as well, not just hidden in the UI
Why it is enforced twice

Hiding a control is a convenience; refusing the write is the actual rule. Both exist so a stale page cannot create an assignment that should not be possible.

Rules and limits​

  • One teacher per subject per class (splits aside).
  • Assigning creates the electronic journal for that subject and class.
  • Unassigning is a soft removal — reassigning the same subject, class and teacher later reuses the existing record rather than failing.
  • Assignments belong to an academic year, taken from the class itself, so they cannot drift out of step with it.

Troubleshooting​

"A pupil says a subject is missing." No teacher is assigned for that subject to their class, or they are in a split group with no teacher.

"A cell is greyed out." The subject's grade range excludes that class — widen the range on the Subjects tab.

"I unassigned and reassigned, and it silently did nothing." This was a real bug and is fixed: reassigning now reuses the earlier record. If you still see it, reload the page first.

"A teacher sees only one of their subjects." Usually an academic-year mismatch. Check the class's year on Classes & parallels.
