Concept maps

What this page is for

A visual map of a topic — the central idea, its branches, and the detail hanging off them. Useful for introducing a unit and for revision.

Creating one

Manually — start from a blank map and build the nodes yourself.

With AI — give a topic and a target number of nodes. The estimate is shown before generating, and you can choose a quality tier.

The canvas

  • Click a node to select it — the selected node is ringed, so you always know what you are editing
  • Add a child from any node
  • Drag nodes to arrange them; positions are kept when you add or delete
  • Attach an image or a YouTube link to a node; the panel names the node it is editing and closes with the ✕ or by clicking empty canvas
  • Full screen for presenting
Adding a node no longer disturbs your layout

Positions you dragged are preserved when the map changes. This used to reset and looked like the view jumping.

Rules and limits

  • AI generation spends tokens; manual editing spends none.
  • Regenerate is only offered for AI-generated maps. A hand-built map has no original brief to regenerate from, and offering it would discard your work.
  • Maps can be published as a material for pupils.

Troubleshooting

"I cannot tell which node I am editing." The selected node has a ring, and the image panel names it in its header.

"Regenerate is missing." The map was created manually. That is deliberate.

"An image will not attach." Paste a direct image URL or a YouTube link. Other pages are not embedded.
