What this page is for
Who is doing well, school-wide: a hall of fame of top pupils and a ranking of classes.
Two dimensions
Switch between them at the top.
Grades ranks by academic average.
Appreciations ranks by recognition points — the awards teachers give for effort, helpfulness and improvement rather than for marks.
A grades board always rewards the same pupils. Recognition points let a pupil who improved sharply, or who consistently helps others, appear somewhere too. Some schools display only this one.
Switching tabs changes more than the ranking: the Hall of Fame's subtitle and the class-standings heading below it reword themselves for whichever dimension is active, and — because appreciations have no year filter — the year dropdown disappears entirely rather than sitting there disabled.
Recognitions are scoped to a pupil's current grade level, so points earned two years ago do not inflate this year's board.
The academic year filter
The grades dimension can be filtered by academic year, defaulting to the current one, with an "all years" option.
Appreciations have no year filter — recognition points are lifetime totals, so the picker is hidden in that mode rather than shown doing nothing.
Class standings
Alongside individual pupils, classes are ranked by their average. This is usually the more actionable half: a class sitting well below the others is a teaching or timetable question, not a pupil question.
Fairness and caveats
Averages are not comparable across subjects, and a class taking harder options will rank lower for reasons that have nothing to do with effort. Before displaying this to pupils, decide whether that is the message you want.
The appreciations dimension exists partly as the gentler alternative.
Where your school requires parental consent, non-consented pupils are excluded from ranked lists.
Rules and limits
- Directors only for this view; pupils have their own, narrower version.
- Grades: year-filterable. Appreciations: lifetime, current grade level.
- Consent gate applies where enabled.
- Averages come from the electronic journals, with exam results as a fallback for pupils who have no journal marks yet.
Troubleshooting
"A strong pupil is missing." They may have no marks in the selected year, or the consent gate is excluding them.
"The year filter disappeared." You are on Appreciations, which is lifetime. Switch to Grades.
"An average here differs from the pupil's own page." This board reads the journals for the selected year. A pupil page may cover a different scope — check the year first.
"Two classes have the same average but rank differently." Ties are broken by the underlying values before rounding.
